Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directorate-Specific Research Opportunities

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) manages a constellation of specialized directorates, each of which may issue sub-portfolio Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) targeting domain-specific scientific and engineering innovation. These directorate BAAs allow investigators to propose cutting-edge research aligned with strategic Air Force and Space Force priorities, ranging from foundational theory to prototype development and subsystem integration.

The Sensors Directorate (AFRL/RY) focuses on electro-optical sensing, RF systems, radar, optical communications, hyperspectral modeling, advanced signal processing, EO/IR fusion, and next-generation airborne or space surveillance. Research often involves materials, photonics, detection algorithms, adaptive waveforms, distributed sensing architectures, and resilient ISR for contested environments.

The Information Directorate (AFRL/RI) pursues breakthroughs in cybersecurity, AI/ML, autonomy, data fusion, digital engineering, quantum information science, modeling and simulation, digital mission management, command-and-control, and resilient cognitive systems. Proposals in this area frequently include federated learning, mission-aware AI agents, secure embedded computing, automated cyber defense, human-machine teaming, cloud-to-edge orchestration, and real-time geospatial analytics.

The Munitions Directorate (AFRL/RW) drives research in energetics, warhead design, weapons effectiveness modeling, fuzing, flight safety mechanisms, physics-based lethality modeling, and integrated kill-chain technologies. Projects often include computational modeling, materials science, range testing, and risk-reduction experimentation for advanced weapons systems.

The Aerospace Systems Directorate (AFRL/RQ) supports propulsion, flight sciences, hypersonics, aerodynamics, air-breathing systems, UAV integration, thermal protection, digital flight test, and vehicle-level experimentation. These programs commonly span early propulsion concepts to sub-scale demonstrators, digital twins, and system-level validation.

The Space Vehicles Directorate (AFRL/RV) accelerates innovation in space sensing, on-orbit autonomy, quantum space systems, ISR constellations, satellite protection, spacecraft materials, and position/navigation/timing for dynamic contested domains. Many programs include multi-site ground coordination, prototype payload experiments, and advanced orbital analytics.

Submission and Review Path

Directorate BAAs generally follow a white paper → dialogue → full proposal pathway. Reviewers assess:

  • Mission alignment and relevance to strategic portfolios

  • Innovation and potential for disruptive capability

  • Technical feasibility, engineering milestones, and experimentation pathways

  • Transition potential and integration benefit

  • Facilities, team expertise, and laboratory capabilities

AFRL strongly values active technical engagement with program officers, especially during the white-paper stage, to ensure that proposals are scoped to the right portfolio and directorate.
