Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program (CDMRP ADRP)

The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Program (ADRP) is a highly competitive biomedical funding mechanism under the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) of the U.S. Department of Defense. ADRP supports innovative research that advances the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias—conditions that pose significant readiness, health, and quality-of-life challenges for aging service members, veterans, and military families. The program recognizes that neurodegeneration, chronic cognitive decline, and dementia exert a substantial burden on the Department of Defense medical community, especially among populations with traumatic brain injury (TBI), PTSD, blast exposure, toxic chemicals, operational stress, or sleep disruption.

CDMRP ADRP research priorities include mechanistic neurobiology, biomarker discovery, neuroinflammation, neural network dynamics, vascular and metabolic contributions to cognitive impairment, genomic risk architecture, and synaptic vulnerability. The program also encourages technology-enabled diagnostics, point-of-care testing, digital biomarkers, advanced neuroimaging, and continuous physiologic monitoring. Translational proposals exploring therapeutic discovery platforms, small-molecule drug development, biologics, neuromodulation, precision medicine strategies, rehabilitation science, remote caregiving technology, and innovative care-delivery frameworks are highly competitive.

Eligibility is inclusive and covers universities, medical schools, nonprofit research institutes, federally funded R&D centers, large corporations, and for-profit biotechnology or digital-health startups. Early-stage companies developing AI-enhanced cognitive assessment tools, remote patient monitoring, adaptive clinical-trial methods, wearable diagnostics, or technology-enabled dementia-care models are well aligned with ADRP’s innovation landscape. Clinical research can involve prospective cohort studies, precision-care analytics, telehealth interventions, multi-omic biomarker discovery, or digitally supported caregiving platforms.

Applications undergo rigorous peer review with evaluation criteria centered on scientific merit, innovation, feasibility, military relevance, translational readiness, and potential for long-term impact on patient care. Proposals that integrate mechanistic understanding with real-world improvements in detection, prevention, treatment, or support for caregiver burden are especially responsive to ADRP goals.
