Breakthrough Award (CDMRP – BCRP)

U.S. Department of Defense

The Breakthrough Award within the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) and the Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) is one of the most influential biomedical funding mechanisms in breast cancer science. Unlike incremental or hypothesis-confirming research, the Breakthrough Award is designed to support paradigm-shifting, transformative ideas that have the potential to dramatically improve prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, or long-term patient outcomes. The mechanism encourages investigators to propose bold concepts capable of changing clinical practice, redefining biological understanding, or accelerating the pathway toward ending breast cancer.

Breakthrough Awards are structured into Levels 1 through 4, each differing in scale, complexity, preliminary data expectations, and leadership requirements:

Level 1 emphasizes innovation without extensive supporting data, allowing investigators to explore high-risk, early-concept science;

Level 2 supports promising ideas with some foundational data;

Level 3 enables larger and more advanced studies requiring multidisciplinary teams and strong preliminary evidence; and

Level 4 supports near-clinical, translational, and large-scale efforts that may involve advanced platforms, patient cohorts, or late-stage intervention strategies.

Eligibility is broad, covering universities, academic medical centers, nonprofit research institutes, and qualified for-profit biotechnology and clinical research entities. Investigators at all career stages—from early-career scientists through senior translational researchers—may apply, provided the chosen level aligns with their experience and supporting data.

Applications must clearly articulate how the proposed work represents a true breakthrough, rather than evolutionary progress. Reviewers evaluate impact, originality, scientific rigor, feasibility, military relevance (when applicable), and alignment with BCRP’s overarching mission of ending breast cancer. Programmatic review additionally considers strategic fit within the existing CDMRP portfolio, scientific diversity, and the potential for clinical relevance.

Typical Breakthrough Award focus areas include novel therapeutic modalities, advanced imaging and detection, tumor microenvironment biology, precision oncology, immunotherapy, survivorship science, and early intervention strategies. Projects with clearly defined translational pathways, strong patient relevance, and disruptive scientific potential are particularly competitive.
