CDMRP Career Development Award (CDA)

U.S. Department of Defense – Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP)

The Career Development Award (CDA) within the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) supports the advancement of early-career investigators transitioning toward research independence in military-relevant biomedical fields. Unlike general early-career mechanisms from NIH or other agencies, the CDMRP CDA requires a strongly integrated mentorship plan, institutionally supported career trajectory, and a research project that aligns with the priorities of the specific CDMRP program (e.g., cancer, neuroscience, infectious disease, rehabilitation, regenerative medicine, trauma, or other topic areas). The CDA’s purpose is to strengthen the pipeline of future leaders who will contribute to breakthroughs that benefit service members, veterans, and military families.

Eligibility varies by CDMRP program, but applicants are generally required to be within a defined number of years from completion of their terminal degree or first faculty appointment. Proposals must demonstrate a committed mentor with a sustained track record in the relevant field, a clear plan for scientific and professional development, and institutional support such as protected research time, infrastructure access, and career advancement commitments. Eligible institutions include U.S.-based universities, medical schools, nonprofit research organizations, and for-profit entities when aligned with CDMRP program intent and military relevance.

CDMRP CDA applications are evaluated on dual components:

  1. Research Innovation and Feasibility, and

  1. Professional Development and Mentorship Quality.

Reviewers assess candidate potential, mentor qualifications, rigor of the training plan, scientific merit, feasibility of the research strategy, military relevance, and alignment with program goals. Programmatic review also considers strategic fit with the broader CDMRP portfolio, potential for high patient or clinical impact, and the likelihood that the award will successfully foster independence.

Research topics commonly include mechanistic biology, advanced diagnostics, rehabilitation strategies, trauma-care innovation, emerging therapeutics, biomarker development, pilot clinical research, precision medicine approaches, AI-enabled health analytics, rehabilitation engineering, or translational technologies relevant to the military health system. Competitive proposals integrate innovative science, structured mentorship, clear milestones toward independence, and strong institutional commitment.
