CDMRP Translational Research Award (TRA): Accelerating Laboratory Innovation Toward Clinical Impact

The Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) created the Translational Research Award (TRA) to accelerate movement of promising laboratory discoveries toward clinical application. Positioned between foundational basic science and downstream clinical trials, the TRA supports research that bridges mechanistic understanding with practical therapeutic, diagnostic, rehabilitative, or preventive solutions capable of improving real-world patient outcomes. Unlike traditional basic science mechanisms, which may explore early hypotheses without a direct path to application, the TRA requires meaningful proof-of-concept data, strong biological or engineering rationale, and a clearly articulated plan for advancing the innovation toward clinical validation, deployment, or long-term utility in military medical settings.

Eligibility follows the standard CDMRP structure: investigators must apply through U.S.-based universities, medical centers, nonprofit research organizations, military medical facilities, or qualified for-profit entities with appropriate compliance capacity. Research teams may include clinicians, surgeons, biologists, biomedical engineers, computational scientists, rehabilitation specialists, or product development experts. Applicants must demonstrate that their environment, infrastructure, and collaborative expertise are sufficient to advance technology toward translational milestones, including large-animal testing, prototype refinement, manufacturing considerations, regulatory alignment, or early feasibility assessment.

TRA reviewers evaluate innovation, scientific rigor, feasibility, strength of preliminary data, clinical promise, pathway to validation, and direct relevance to military health priorities—including trauma, oncology, infectious disease, neurorehabilitation, regenerative medicine, cardiopulmonary dysfunction, diagnostics, toxic exposure, and complex multisystem conditions. Programmatic review additionally considers portfolio balance, strategic fit, unmet need, and likelihood that the proposed work will accelerate improvements in military or veteran care.

Successful TRA applications include clear milestones, defined go/no-go decision points, regulatory or translational strategy, realistic timelines, and a well-supported plan for transitioning into follow-on validation studies or downstream clinical testing. Common project types include biomarker qualification, prototype device refinement, large-animal preclinical drug testing, engineered biologics, regenerative tissue applications, wearable monitoring technologies, neurorehabilitation platforms, imaging or surgical tools, computational diagnostics, and early feasibility studies in limited clinical settings.

The Translational Research Award is a high-value mechanism for investigators ready to move past exploratory science and into targeted development that reduces risk, sharpens deployment potential, and establishes a credible path to clinically relevant impact for service members, veterans, and their families.
