Chronic Pain Management Research Program (CPMRP)

Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs – U.S. Department of Defense

The Chronic Pain Management Research Program (CPMRP), part of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), funds innovative biomedical and clinical research addressing chronic pain conditions that significantly affect military readiness, operational performance, and long-term health outcomes. Chronic pain is one of the most prevalent conditions impacting service members and veterans, often resulting from musculoskeletal injuries, combat trauma, repetitive strain, joint degradation, amputation, TBI, or stress-related neurophysiological alterations. Persistent pain is a leading contributor to medical discharge, disability claims, functional decline, and reduced quality of life for military personnel and their families.

CPMRP supports research across the full spectrum of pain science, including mechanistic studies, neural-sensory disruption, inflammatory processes, peripheral and central sensitization, rehabilitation strategies, non-opioid therapies, pharmacologic interventions, neuromodulation, precision pain profiling, wearable monitoring, psychosocial determinants, and integrated behavioral approaches. High-priority topics include early pain detection, predictive analytics, biologically informed treatment stratification, advanced imaging for pain characterization, digital therapeutics, VR-assisted rehabilitation, opioid-sparing strategies, telehealth-delivered care models, and innovative pain-management technologies for deployed or remote environments.

Eligibility is broad and includes universities, academic medical centers, nonprofit research institutions, VA hospitals, federally funded R&D centers, and qualified for-profit entities developing therapeutics, diagnostics, rehabilitation technologies, or digital-health solutions. Proposals must demonstrate military relevance, which may include improving pain management for wounded warriors, enhancing rehabilitation after orthopedic or neurologic injury, reducing opioid reliance, supporting long-term recovery for veterans, or expanding access to pain-care tools for geographically dispersed installations.

CPMRP applications undergo rigorous peer and programmatic review, with evaluation criteria based on innovation, feasibility, scientific merit, team capability, clinical relevance, and potential for meaningful impact. Successful submissions clearly articulate unmet medical need, present strong scientific rationale supported by preliminary data where required, and demonstrate realistic pathways toward improved patient outcomes, survivorship, and system-wide clinical adoption within military or veteran healthcare settings.
