Common Technical Document (CTD) Preparation: Anatomy of the Project
The Common Technical Document (CTD) is the internationally recognized format for submitting information to regulatory authorities such as the FDA, EMA, Health Canada, and others. Designed to harmonize the submission process across regions, the CTD organizes a drug’s development data into a modular structure that simplifies both submission preparation and regulatory review.
Preparing a CTD is a highly structured and collaborative project that requires detailed planning, technical expertise, and seamless integration of scientific, clinical, and manufacturing information. At ScienceDocs, we support our clients by coordinating the development of full CTD submissions or specific modules, depending on their needs.
The CTD is divided into five modules:
Module 1 – Regional Administrative Information: This section includes region-specific documents such as application forms, labeling, and cover letters. Although technically not part of the harmonized CTD core, Module 1 is essential for submission acceptance.
Module 2 – Summaries and Overviews: High-level narratives that summarize and interpret the detailed reports contained in Modules 3–5, including clinical and nonclinical overviews and summaries.
Module 3 – Quality (CMC): Information on the chemical composition, manufacturing processes, controls, and stability of the drug substance and product.
Module 4 – Nonclinical Study Reports: Detailed study reports on pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmacokinetics, organized to show the evolution of the safety profile from early discovery through preclinical development.
Module 5 – Clinical Study Reports: Full reports of clinical trials, pharmacokinetic studies, and safety analyses that demonstrate the product’s efficacy and safety in humans.
CTD preparation demands absolute consistency across modules. For example, data cited in clinical summaries must match the detailed reports in Module 5, and CMC information must align with manufacturing descriptions throughout the application. Writers must also adhere strictly to ICH guidelines, maintaining clarity, conciseness, and regulatory focus.
At ScienceDocs, we provide expert project management and regulatory writing support to navigate this complex process. Our team ensures that Common Technical Document submissions are coherent, complete, and strategically crafted to withstand regulatory scrutiny. We help sponsors—whether large pharmaceutical companies or early-stage biotechs—assemble high-quality submissions that drive products forward on the path to approval.
We would be delighted to assist you with any of your regulatory writing needs. Feel free to contact us and one of our Project Managers will be right back to you to set up a meeting.
