Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP): Strengthening Advanced Laboratory Capabilities for DoD Science and Engineering
The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) provides competitive grants to U.S. universities for the acquisition of major research instrumentation essential to DoD-relevant scientific and engineering advancement. Administered jointly through the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), DURIP strengthens university R&D infrastructure by funding high-value laboratory equipment that supports cutting-edge research priorities, enhances experimentation capacity, and advances long-term national security technology development.
DURIP funds major equipment and instrumentation that may include advanced sensing platforms, fabrication and prototyping tools, lasers, quantum research systems, hypersonics test equipment, autonomous systems experimentation platforms, energetics characterization systems, biomedical instrumentation, high-performance computing clusters, advanced materials analysis, and diagnostics relevant to DoD modernization priorities. Awards are made to improve laboratory readiness, expand interdisciplinary access, support large collaborative research groups, and ensure the ability to perform sophisticated experimental work that cannot be supported with internal funds alone.
Eligibility is restricted to U.S. degree-granting colleges and universities, with priority given to institutions conducting DoD-sponsored or DoD-relevant research. For-profit commercial organizations are not eligible for direct DURIP awards; however, industry partners may participate by providing matching funds, technical support, co-development advantages, installation guidance, or maintenance support, especially in cases where instrumentation is dual-use or aligned with defense industrial base capability.
Successful DURIP proposals must demonstrate how the proposed equipment will:
• enhance DoD-supported research already underway
• benefit multiple investigators or departments, expanding collaborative capacity
• support graduate training, laboratory workforce development, or interdisciplinary research productivity
• strengthen long-term national security research objectives
• enable experimentation that cannot be achieved without substantial capital infrastructure
Award sizes typically range from $50,000 to $1.5M, with occasional larger center-level awards. Proposals must include detailed equipment specifications, vendor quotes, cost justification, installation requirements, user group descriptions, maintenance plans, space/utility readiness, and clear alignment with active DoD research or planned future research. Applicants must also show how the instrumentation will remain sustainable, accessible to multiple users, and strategically relevant to DoD modernization priorities.
