Engineering Grant Writer Dr. Ian – DOD, DOT, EPA, NIH expertise
Engineering Grant Writer Dr. Ian earned a Chemistry MS from the College of William and Mary, where he performed research developing composites for radiation shielding at the NASA Langley Research Center. He earned an Engineering PhD with Materials Science focus from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), where he utilized mechanical testing and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to determine failure mechanisms in Al alloy forms and finite element analysis (FEA) to model impact mechanics in biomedical testing instruments. He initially learned FEA while modeling aerospace vehicle dynamics at MSC Software Corporation, and SEM at Edwards LifeSciences documenting artificial heart valve failure. He learned atomic force microscopy (AFM) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) while assisting in radiation detector and battery development as a postdoctoral researcher at Fisk and Vanderbilt Universities and Hunter College, respectively.
Dr. Ian served as international consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) and the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Specifically, he served as Strategy and Operations Consultant to the WHO Bangkok, Gevena HQ, and India Country Office (WCO) in New Delhi, India, where a performed numerous duties that included preparing status reports on medical field stations for the Polio Prevention Unit. For UNDP, he revised and edited Malawi’s 2nd UN Climate Change Report and advised on the use of environmental and economic modeling to predict climate change effects.
Dr. Ian has assisted agencies such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), National Institute of Health (NIH), US Navy and Qatar Foundation commercialize technology via SBIR and STTR programs. He has also assisted in producing and revising grant applications for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) program.
