ERDC Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) – Broad Agency Announcement
The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center Geospatial Research Laboratory (GRL) issues Broad Agency Announcements to advance cutting-edge geospatial science, predictive terrain analytics, situational awareness, and mission-planning capabilities. GRL is the Army’s focal point for research that integrates remote sensing, terrain reasoning, computer vision, machine learning, autonomous mapping, and 3D/4D geospatial modeling. The laboratory plays a critical role in developing tools that allow military operators, mission planners, and analysts to rapidly extract actionable intelligence from complex geospatial data in contested or data-limited environments.
Research priorities include automated feature extraction, real-time change detection, object classification, metadata fusion, persistent surveillance analytics, and terrain-aware mission-planning frameworks. GRL advances analytical methods capable of processing satellite data, UAV imagery, LIDAR surveys, multispectral and hyperspectral imagery, bathymetric measurements, geospatial sensor networks, and dynamically evolving terrain datasets. Proposals may focus on next-generation algorithms for 3D/4D modeling, automated route planning, environment reconstruction, risk assessment, disaster response analytics, or autonomous navigation in denied environments.
Applications span a wide range of military mission areas including operational planning, ISR integration, border monitoring, civil-works resilience, reconnaissance, humanitarian response, natural-hazard prediction, coastal or installation vulnerability assessment, and decision-support for mission command. GRL aims to shorten the time required to acquire, process, analyze, and visualize high-resolution geospatial intelligence — ideally from raw data to actionable insight with minimal human intervention.
Eligibility for the ERDC GRL BAAs is broad. Universities, nonprofit scientific institutions, federally funded research & development centers, private geospatial firms, dual-use AI/ML startups, and large for-profit corporations are all eligible to apply. International participation may be restricted for data-sensitivity or classification reasons. Proposals are generally introduced through a short technical white paper, enabling early program-manager dialogue and refinement of scope before a full proposal is invited. Evaluation emphasizes scientific merit, algorithmic rigor, Army relevance, technical feasibility, scalability, and potential integration into Army or Corps of Engineers analytical environments.
