Dr. Williams holds a Ph.D. in Marine Science from the University of South Florida and a B.S. in Marine Biology from the University of North Carolina, Wilmington. Her dissertation focused on understanding how viral infection influences nutrient dynamics across a variety of marine ecosystems as well as the evolution and adaptation of bacterial hosts. Dr. William’s postdoctoral research took her to the depths of the ocean where she studied the role of viruses inhabiting deep sea hydrothermal vents. As the Director of Environmental Virology at the J. Craig Venter Institute, Dr. Williams utilized cutting-edge metagenomic techniques to explore viral communities inhabiting the global oceans, terrestrial soils, the atmosphere and the human body. Dr. Williams led the development of patent-pending “single virus genomics” technology, which allows users to isolate individual virions from environmental and clinical samples without having to culture host cells.
