Dr. Jonathan – ScienceDocs Medical Illustrator, PhD in Neuroscience
Medical Illustrator Dr. Jonathan has a B.A. cum laude in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. During his undergraduate studies, Dr. Jonathan served two terms as President of the Mentor’s Club, and as a Teaching Assistant. His honor’s thesis investigated the role of the gene BclXL in the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, and whether naturally occurring compounds like curcumin could inhibit its function.
Dr. Jonathan subsequently earned his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus. During his graduate studies, Dr. Jonathan undertook a functional genomics approach to understanding how the human brain grew to be so big evolutionarily. Specifically, he investigated the way in which the genomic copy number of a protein fragment, DUF1220, contributes to human brain expansion. For this project, Dr. Jonathan developed a transgenic mouse line, a cell culture system using advanced microscopic imaging, an RNAseq investigation, and an in situ analysis of human fetal brain tissue.
In addition to peer reviewed publications, Dr. Jonathan has experience writing technical documents as a Technical Specialist for a patent law firm, as well as general audience science and opinion writing for Inverse.com. Dr. Jonathan also has extensive formal training in fine art, and started an illustration company that specializes in scientific and medical renderings, illustrations, and virtual reality. He has developed educational, marketing, and outreach materials for academic and medical clients alike, as well as procedurally driven data visualizations, and a spine surgery in virtual reality.
Dr. Jonathan speaks the language of science, and is able to generate aesthetically appealing visuals to help fluidly communicate complex and detailed content. He has provided work for grant proposals, presentations, peer reviewed journal articles, and other mediums.
