NIH DP2 New Innovator Award Support

The NIH DP2 New Innovator Award is part of the High-Risk, High-Reward Research (HRHR) program and is specifically designed to identify and empower exceptional early-stage investigators. The mechanism funds bold, creative, and paradigm-shifting scientific ideas that may not yet have the preliminary data required for more traditional NIH applications. The DP2 Award promotes rapid scientific independence by providing substantial research support at a critical stage when investigators are building laboratories, recruiting teams, securing essential resources, and establishing their own research identity.

Eligible applicants must meet NIH’s Early-Stage Investigator (ESI) criteria and typically be in the early years of a faculty or equivalent research appointment. U.S. academic and nonprofit research institutions are eligible, and—when specifically permitted by the Funding Opportunity Announcement—qualified for-profit entities may also participate. Citizenship is not required unless otherwise stipulated by a given FOA. Applicants should demonstrate strong potential for high-impact discovery, early evidence of creativity, and the ability to pursue untested ideas that could expand or redefine scientific understanding.

DP2 applications are structurally distinct from standard R01-type mechanisms. Rather than presenting a detailed experimental plan, applicants submit a high-level, essay-style research narrative that emphasizes scientific imagination, conceptual novelty, and the potential for substantial impact on human health or basic biology. Proposal elements typically include:

  • A transformative scientific idea or vision, described clearly without requiring preliminary data

  • An explanation of scientific innovation, how the concept differs from existing paradigms, and why it is unusually high-risk

  • Anticipated scientific impact, including how success could redefine a field or open new translational pathways

  • A rationale for feasibility, showing how DP2 resources will enable technical progress, capacity building, or pilot exploration

  • Investigator background, independence, leadership potential, and early accomplishments, demonstrating readiness for scientific autonomy

  • A resource and capability justification, including how funds will support personnel, laboratory development, computational tools, or specialized equipment

  • Institutional environment descriptions, when allowed, supporting the applicant’s ability to execute a creative and far-reaching project

Reviewers evaluate the conceptual strength of the proposed vision, the investigator’s innovative capacity, and the likelihood that DP2-funded work will produce a major scientific advance. Narrative clarity, originality, and the investigator’s leadership trajectory are critical review features.

ScienceDocs supports DP2 applicants with innovation framing, narrative development, strategic positioning, and scientific storytelling. We help early-stage investigators articulate their conceptual vision, frame high-risk ideas persuasively, and prepare professional materials that reflect NIH expectations for HRHR mechanisms.

If you are preparing a DP2 New Innovator Award application and want expert support to develop a compelling, competitive proposal, ScienceDocs is ready to assist.
