NIH P60 Comprehensive Center – Integrated Multi-Project and Community-Focused Research Support

The NIH P60 Comprehensive Center mechanism supports large, fully integrated, multidisciplinary research centers that bring together multiple research projects, advanced shared-core facilities, community or clinical engagement activities, and training components under one unified scientific theme. Unlike individual project grants, the P60 mechanism funds center-level operations, strategic leadership, institutional development, and coordinated programming designed to advance science, accelerate discovery, train the next generation of investigators, and provide shared research capabilities to a broad community. P60 centers frequently serve as national or regional hubs, bringing together diverse expertise and institutional resources to improve scientific impact and public health outcomes.

The structure of a P60 center often includes:

  • Multiple mature hypothesis-driven research projects, each addressing essential questions within the center’s overarching thematic domain

  • An Administrative Core, responsible for governance, evaluation, scientific oversight, regulatory compliance, strategic planning, and cross-project coordination

  • Scientific or technical cores, providing shared resources such as biostatistics, data science, biospecimen management, molecular analysis, informatics, imaging, simulation, preclinical facilities, or clinical research coordination

  • Training and workforce development components, including junior investigator support, professional development programs, technical skill development, postdoctoral mentoring, or interdisciplinary faculty training

  • Community or clinical outreach activities, which may include regional partnerships, community advisory boards, program dissemination, translational implementation, or population-level engagement

This structure is similar to P50 and U54 mechanisms, but the P60 is typically broader in scope, with expanded mandates for community engagement, workforce development, scientific dissemination, and large-scale interdisciplinary leadership.

Eligibility and Institutional Requirements

P60 centers may be led by:

  • U.S. universities, medical centers, and research hospitals

  • Nonprofit scientific institutes

  • Qualified for-profit organizations when permitted by the FOA

Foreign institutions are generally ineligible unless explicitly allowed. Applicants must demonstrate significant institutional commitment, including administrative capacity, scientific infrastructure, personnel, research space, and long-term sustainability planning. Because of the scope and complexity, P60 centers are typically led by senior investigators with extensive leadership experience, national reputation, and a strong record of collaborative science. Multi-PI models are common when thematic breadth spans multiple disciplines or campus units.

Proposal Structure and Review Considerations

Competitive P60 applications include:

  • A clearly articulated scientific vision and strategic leadership plan

  • Mature, interdependent research projects with strong preliminary data, clear significance, and rigorous methodology

  • Shared core facilities justified by investigator demand, projected utilization, operational feasibility, and value to the scientific community

  • Training and workforce development infrastructure, including junior investigator support, mentoring plans, and skills-building curricula

  • Community or health-system engagement components that enhance translational impact and broaden the center’s scientific footprint

  • Detailed governance, data sharing, advisory committee structures, evaluation metrics, and sustainability strategies

Budget and Duration

Budgets for P60 awards are substantial and may support personnel, multi-project operations, equipment acquisition, computational and laboratory infrastructure, pilot projects, training programs, administrative systems, advisory committees, and community outreach. Award periods generally last five years, with renewal contingent on productivity, public health relevance, and center-level leadership impact.

ScienceDocs supports P60 applicants with center planning, multi-project integration, core design, advisory and governance planning, training and workforce components, data-sharing frameworks, and full proposal production aligned with NIH review expectations.
