NIH R56 High-Priority, Short-Term Project Award (Bridge Funding)
The NIH R56 High-Priority, Short-Term Project Award is designed to provide rapid, flexible funding for meritorious research applications that fall just short of the payline or that address particularly high programmatic priorities. Often referred to as “bridge funding,” the R56 mechanism helps investigators maintain research momentum while they collect additional data, revise an application, or respond to emerging scientific opportunities.
R56 awards are commonly used in two circumstances:
to support highly meritorious R01 applications that narrowly miss funding but are considered programmatically important
to rapidly support high-priority, short-term research projects that require immediate funding
An R56 award typically provides one to two years of support, enabling investigators to:
generate key preliminary data for resubmission
strengthen the competitiveness of an unfunded R01
maintain laboratory personnel or research infrastructure
pursue urgent or time-sensitive research questions
Budget levels vary by Institute and the needs of the project, but R56 awards commonly fund direct research costs such as personnel, supplies, and essential project expenses necessary to maintain scientific progress.
Competitive R56 candidates usually demonstrate:
a strong, previously reviewed R01 application close to the payline
compelling significance and alignment with Institute priorities
a high likelihood of success with additional data or refinement
a strong track record of productivity and capable investigative team
Selection for R56 support often includes programmatic judgment in addition to peer-review scores. Because of this, program alignment and clear articulation of public health impact are especially important. Many investigators successfully leverage R56 support toward eventual R01 funding.
At ScienceDocs, our team includes former NIH reviewers, program officials, and experienced R01 and R56 investigators. We help researchers interpret summary statements, strengthen Specific Aims, address reviewer critiques, and strategically position proposals for competitive resubmission or bridge funding.
