NIH R56 High-Priority, Short-Term Project Award (Bridge Funding)
The NIH R56 High-Priority, Short-Term Project Award is designed to provide rapid, flexible funding for meritorious research applications that fall just short of the payline or address particularly high programmatic priorities. Often referred to as “bridge funding,” the R56 mechanism helps investigators maintain research momentum while they collect additional data, revise an application, or respond to shifting scientific opportunities.
R56 awards are commonly used in two situations:
to support highly meritorious R01 applications that narrowly miss funding but are viewed as important to the Institute’s mission
to rapidly fund high-priority, short-term projects that require immediate support
The R56 mechanism typically provides one to two years of funding, allowing investigators to:
generate key preliminary data
strengthen the competitiveness of an unfunded R01
sustain personnel or research infrastructure during funding gaps
address urgent or emerging research questions
Budget levels vary by Institute and by the needs of the proposed work, but R56 awards generally support direct research costs such as personnel, supplies, and essential project expenses necessary to maintain progress.
Competitive R56 candidates usually demonstrate:
a strong, previously scored R01 application that is close to the funding range
compelling significance and alignment with Institute priorities
high likelihood of becoming fully competitive with additional data or refinement
a productive research track record and capable investigative team
Review and selection processes for R56 awards can involve programmatic decision-making in addition to peer-review scoring. Because of this, program alignment and clear communication of public health impact are especially important. Many investigators use R56 funding as a strategic bridge that leads to successful resubmission and award of an R01.
At ScienceDocs, our team includes former NIH reviewers, program officials, and experienced R01 and R56 investigators. We assist researchers in interpreting summary statements, strengthening Specific Aims, addressing reviewer critiques, and strategically positioning proposals for competitive resubmission or bridge support.
