NIH RM1 Multi-PI Team Science Award – Integrated Research Across Disciplines
The NIH RM1 Multi-PI Team Science mechanism supports highly integrated research teams working collaboratively on complex scientific problems that cannot be addressed by individual investigators alone. Unlike traditional R01 projects or multi-component center mechanisms, the RM1 supports a single unified scientific project where all investigators contribute synergistically toward shared aims. The mechanism is designed to break down disciplinary silos by bringing together teams from biology, engineering, mathematics, clinical sciences, computer science, chemistry, physics, behavioral science, biomedical imaging, and other fields to address frontier challenges requiring coordinated intellectual leadership and deeply integrated strategies.
RM1 programs foster a team-based culture where innovation emerges from cross-pollination of ideas, joint method development, and collaborative experimentation. The structure supports complex, multifaceted research with substantial conceptual or technological ambition—often involving multi-modal data, advanced computation, shared instrumentation, translational pipelines, or multi-system biological questions. Because RM1 awards focus on a single project rather than separate sub-projects, the narrative must convincingly show that synergy is essential to success and that unified team science will generate knowledge unattainable through independent R-level awards.
Eligibility and Institutional Requirements
Eligible applicant organizations include:
U.S.-based higher education institutions
Medical schools and research hospitals
Nonprofit research centers and consortia
Qualified for-profit organizations, when allowed by the FOA
Foreign participation when explicitly permitted
Institutions must demonstrate strong infrastructure, commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, research coordination capacity, and availability of shared scientific resources. Leadership teams should reflect complementary expertise and proven track records of collaboration.
Review and Narrative Requirements
RM1 review criteria emphasize:
Unified scientific goals and conceptual innovation
Synergy across investigators and disciplines
Methodological rigor and integration strategy
Leadership and governance plans for shared decision-making
Feasibility of coordinated execution
Appropriate shared facilities, data systems, or core resources
Plans for mentoring, workforce development, or cross-disciplinary training (when relevant)
Successful applications articulate why team science is essential, not merely additive, and present a strong governance structure for scientific decision-making, conflict resolution, integration, and data stewardship.
