NIH RM2 Mid-Scale Team Science Award – Integrated, Interdisciplinary Research

The NIH RM2 mechanism supports mid-scale, team-based research programs that require interdisciplinary collaboration without the extensive administrative complexity of center-level mechanisms. Conceptually similar to the RM1 mechanism, RM2 awards enable multiple investigators to work together on a single unified scientific project where coordinated intellectual leadership and method integration are essential. The RM2 fills a structural niche between standard R01s—which support individual laboratory research—and large multi-core center mechanisms, offering a streamlined approach for integrated scientific efforts that demand shared expertise, joint technology development, or harmonized experimental frameworks.

RM2 programs are ideally suited for scientific problems requiring collaborative execution, resource sharing, cross-disciplinary reasoning, and unified experimental design. Projects may involve integrated computational and laboratory experimentation, multi-omics pipelines, multi-system physiology, behavioral and clinical integration, advanced imaging or sensor development, complex informatics environments, or translational approaches spanning multiple conceptual domains. Reviewers expect strong justification for why the research cannot be effectively executed through separate R-level mechanisms and why collaborative synergy is essential to success.

Eligibility and Institutional Expectations

Eligible organizations include:

  • U.S. universities and colleges

  • Medical schools and research hospitals

  • Nonprofit research centers and consortium-based programs

  • Qualified for-profit research organizations (as permitted by the FOA)

  • Foreign participation when explicitly allowed

Applicants must demonstrate the scientific capacity and institutional environment to support integrated team science, including access to shared instrumentation, data systems, laboratory infrastructure, communication platforms, and collaborative research environments.

Review and Proposal Structure

RM2 applications must present:

  • A unified and innovative scientific vision

  • Synergistic aims that depend on interdisciplinary collaboration

  • Leadership and coordination plans for scientific decision-making, data integration, and conflict resolution

  • Resource-sharing strategies, joint methodologies, and collaborative execution plans

  • Feasible timelines and milestone structures aligned with team-based activity

Reviewers evaluate the clarity of integration, the novelty of the scientific question, the quality and complementarity of team expertise, and the feasibility of coordinated execution.
