NIH T15 Institutional Training Programs – Biomedical Informatics, Data Science, and Computational Workforce Development

The NIH T15 Institutional Training Program supports the development of leaders in biomedical informatics and data science by providing structured, interdisciplinary research and education environments. Unlike traditional institutional training mechanisms, T15 programs concentrate specifically on computational approaches and data-driven scientific inquiry. Trainees develop expertise in machine learning, biomedical discovery pipelines, clinical informatics, pattern recognition, natural-language processing, imaging analytics, genomics and multi-omics computation, cyber-physical systems, health systems modeling, decision-support algorithms, privacy-preserving data sharing, and other specialized domains at the frontier of biomedical research.

T15 programs aim to train scientists who will develop transformative methodologies and analytical frameworks that enable breakthroughs across biomedicine, public health, translational medicine, and healthcare analytics. Trainees learn to design, evaluate, and apply computational tools to extract meaning from complex biological, clinical, and population-level datasets. As biomedical research becomes increasingly data-driven, the T15 mechanism helps ensure a robust national workforce capable of addressing challenges in predictive modeling, data harmonization, clinical decision support, AI safety, scalable computation, and secure biomedical data architecture.

Eligibility and Institutional Requirements

Eligibility includes accredited U.S. academic institutions with demonstrable strengths in:

  • Biomedical informatics, computational biology, or AI/ML

  • Engineering, statistics, computer science, or quantitative health sciences

  • Clinical informatics infrastructure and interdisciplinary mentorship capacity

  • Advanced computational resources and data management environments

Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and programs must support graduate-level or postdoctoral trainees through robust mentoring, rigorous didactic coursework, protected research time, and domain-specific professional development.

Proposal and Review Priorities

Competitive T15 proposals must demonstrate:

  • A cohesive training curriculum that blends computation with biomedical science

  • Interdisciplinary mentorship teams with complementary expertise

  • Access to high-value computational platforms, secure databases, clinical systems, and analytical tools

  • A strong institutional environment for data-driven discovery, collaboration, and translational learning

  • Evaluation and tracking frameworks that assess trainee progression and long-term workforce impact

Reviewers evaluate curriculum quality, training approach innovation, mentorship infrastructure, scientific environment, institutional commitment, and potential for advancing the biomedical informatics workforce.
