NIH T34 MARC Undergraduate Training Programs – Structured Research Pathways for Diverse Future Scientists

The NIH T34 Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Training Program supports institutions committed to preparing historically underserved and diverse undergraduate populations for doctoral-level training in biomedical and behavioral sciences. Unlike T32 programs that focus on graduate and postdoctoral trainees, the T34 mechanism is specifically designed to strengthen the educational pipeline at the undergraduate level. MARC programs cultivate early research identity, academic persistence, and professional development, while providing structured pathways into competitive PhD programs and long-term research careers.

T34 programs emphasize a supportive and enriched academic environment that includes mentoring networks, skill-building workshops, career planning resources, and hands-on laboratory research training. Students participate in structured curricula that foster critical scientific thinking, experimental design, quantitative reasoning, data analysis, literature review, research ethics, scientific communication, team-based collaboration, and exposure to a broad interdisciplinary research landscape. MARC programs also promote community-building, cohort development, cultural awareness, and student retention strategies designed to support success throughout undergraduate training and beyond.

Eligibility and Institutional Requirements

Eligibility includes accredited U.S. colleges and universities—especially minority-serving institutions, emerging research universities, and institutions with demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who show strong academic potential, sustained interest in scientific careers, and a clear willingness to pursue doctoral research training. Institutions must provide:

  • A structured curriculum that integrates scientific coursework with laboratory training

  • Interdisciplinary mentorship teams and research opportunities during the academic year and summer

  • Community-building and cohort support systems

  • Professional development activities, including seminars, workshops, conferences, and scientific communication training

  • Access to appropriate laboratory facilities, core resources, and research environments

  • Responsible conduct of research instruction and ethical training

  • Systems for tracking student progress, outcomes, retention, and graduate school placement

Proposal and Review Priorities

Competitive T34 proposals demonstrate:

  • A strong institutional vision for developing a diverse scientific workforce

  • Evidence-based enrichment activities and well-integrated research experiences

  • Mentor commitment, laboratory availability, and clear trainee advancement strategies

  • Recruitment, retention, and evaluation plans with measurable outcomes

  • Institutional investment and administrative support for long-term sustainability

Reviewers evaluate curriculum quality, mentorship depth, educational rigor, equity and inclusion strategies, student success metrics, and the program’s potential to increase the number of underrepresented scientists entering doctoral pathways.
