NIH T35 Short-Term Institutional Training Grants – Early Research Immersion for Health Professional Trainees

The NIH T35 Short-Term Institutional Training Grant mechanism provides immersive, mentored research experiences for health professional students during summer or academic breaks. Unlike long-term mechanisms such as T32 training programs, the T35 is strategically designed to spark early interest in biomedical and clinical research careers among medical, dental, veterinary, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistant, optometry, and other health profession trainees. Because students are at an exploratory and formative stage, well-designed T35 programs can influence long-term career trajectories by exposing trainees to the excitement, intellectual rigor, and societal impact of scientific discovery.

T35 programs generally span 8–12 weeks and offer a structured, short-term introduction to research. Trainees participate in mentored laboratory or clinical research projects, interactive seminars, discussion groups, professional development workshops, responsible conduct of research instruction, and scientific communication training. Short-term immersion helps students build confidence, understand research culture, develop foundational analytical skills, and form early mentorship relationships that may lead to future fellowships, research electives, or graduate training.

Eligibility and Institutional Requirements

Eligible institutions include U.S. universities, medical schools, dental schools, veterinary schools, and other accredited health profession programs with active research laboratories and strong faculty mentorship capacity. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, consistent with NIH NRSA requirements. Institutions must demonstrate:

  • Adequate research infrastructure and laboratory space

  • Faculty mentors with active research portfolios and time for short-term guidance

  • Structured orientation and onboarding activities

  • Accessible core resources, instrumentation, and research support systems

  • A curriculum that integrates research exposure, professional development, ethics, and scientific communication

Proposal and Review Priorities

Competitive T35 applications include:

  • Robust recruitment strategies, including plans to broaden participation and enhance workforce diversity

  • Clearly defined learning objectives, competencies, and short-term research goals

  • Mentor qualification documentation, describing expertise, track records, and supervision plans

  • Structured evaluation frameworks, including pre- and post-experience assessment, milestone tracking, and long-term trainee monitoring

  • Plans for responsible conduct of research instruction

  • Program sustainability and administrative oversight plans

Reviewers evaluate scientific rigor, training feasibility, institutional commitment, faculty capacity, inclusion strategies, and the likelihood that the experience will meaningfully increase long-term engagement in research careers.
