NIH TL1 Training Programs – Integrated Translational Research Education Across the CTSA Network
The NIH TL1 Institutional Training Program is a core educational component of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) infrastructure. Its mission is to cultivate the next generation of translational scientists capable of bridging basic laboratory discoveries with clinical, population-based, and community health applications. Unlike traditional institutional training mechanisms, TL1 programs emphasize multidisciplinary learning, structured translational research training, team science principles, and exposure to real-world challenges in clinical and community settings.
TL1 trainees participate in a robust learning environment that blends didactic coursework, mentored laboratory or clinical research, hands-on methodological training, grant-writing instruction, regulatory science exposure, entrepreneurship and commercialization awareness, and career development strategies. Programs are tailored to develop researchers who understand how to efficiently evaluate scientific discoveries, navigate regulatory pathways, translate innovations into clinical practice, address real patient needs, and integrate community perspectives into applied biomedical research. Trainees also gain communication skills, exposure to stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration competencies—critical attributes within the rapidly evolving translational research ecosystem.
Eligibility and Institutional Requirements
Eligibility for TL1 programs is institution-based, and only institutions that hold a UL1 CTSA hub—or formally partner with an active CTSA site—may apply. Trainees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and may include:
Predoctoral students
Postdoctoral fellows
Dual-degree candidates (e.g., MD/PhD, PharmD/PhD, DDS/PhD, DVM/PhD)
Institutional environments must demonstrate:
A strong translational research community
Access to clinical faculty, community networks, and research infrastructure
Biostatistics, informatics, regulatory, and ethics expertise
Structured mentorship models and career development resources
Opportunities for clinical immersion, community engagement, and interdisciplinary integration
Proposal and Review Priorities
Competitive TL1 applications articulate:
Structured didactic curricula tailored to translational competencies
Mentorship teams with complementary clinical, methodological, and scientific expertise
Individualized Development Plans (IDPs)
Community engagement and entrepreneurship exposure
Training in responsible conduct of research, data science, trial readiness, patient-centered outcomes, and dissemination strategies
Evaluation metrics, workforce development goals, trainee tracking systems, and diversity recruitment strategies
Integration with the UL1 hub’s research environment, cores, and translational mission
Reviewers assess program feasibility, educational innovation, infrastructure quality, institutional commitment, diversity efforts, mentorship depth, and long-term translational impact.
