NSF All Institutes Cross-Directorate Programs

The National Science Foundation funds research through multiple scientific directorates (BIO, CISE, ENG, GEO, MPS, SBE, and others), but some opportunities do not belong to any single discipline. These are known as cross-directorate programs — initiatives designed to support research that spans multiple fields, institutions, or areas of societal impact.

NSF Cross-directorate programs are often among the most innovative funding mechanisms at the agency. They are typically created to address emerging national priorities such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, climate resilience, workforce development, or technology translation. Rather than supporting narrowly defined disciplinary work, these programs intentionally encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and broader impacts.

For researchers, these opportunities can be both attractive and challenging. They frequently involve multi-investigator teams, cross-departmental partnerships, industry collaborators, or university consortia. Proposals must clearly integrate diverse expertise while maintaining a coherent scientific narrative. Unlike standard NSF submissions, success often depends not only on technical merit but also on demonstrating coordination, management structure, and societal outcomes.

Because cross-directorate programs bring together multiple NSF review cultures, expectations can differ from traditional core program submissions. Reviewers may come from several scientific backgrounds, which means proposals must be written for both specialists and educated non-specialists. Strong project management plans, clearly defined roles, and a persuasive broader-impacts strategy are particularly important.

ScienceDocs has more than 20 years of experience assisting investigators with complex and interdisciplinary NSF proposals. We help research teams organize collaborations, develop integrated project plans, and present their work in a way that communicates clearly across disciplines. Our team supports universities, research institutes, and startup partners seeking to align their ideas with NSF priorities.

We also help researchers identify relevant opportunities using our IP-LINK research discovery platform, which aggregates NSF funding opportunities across directorates and related programs.
