NSF Ethical and Responsible Research (ER2) Programs
The National Science Foundation supports research not only on scientific discovery but also on the responsible conduct and societal implications of research. Ethical and Responsible Research (ER2) programs fund projects that examine how science and technology affect individuals, communities, and society, and how research can be conducted in an ethical and socially beneficial manner.
These proposals often involve interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists, engineers, social scientists, and scholars in fields such as ethics, public policy, education, and law. Topics may include research integrity, data privacy, artificial intelligence ethics, human subjects protections, responsible innovation, and the societal impacts of emerging technologies.
Unlike standard research proposals, NSF ER2 submissions must clearly connect scientific activity with ethical analysis or community impact. The project should demonstrate how it will improve research practices, inform policy, enhance public trust, or develop frameworks for responsible use of technology. Reviewers evaluate both the intellectual contribution and the broader societal relevance of the work.
Many proposals struggle because they emphasize either technical science or purely philosophical discussion without integrating the two. Successful applications show how ethical considerations are embedded within real research activities, educational programs, or institutional practices. Clear communication across disciplines is essential, since review panels often include both technical and non-technical experts.
ScienceDocs works with investigators and institutions to structure interdisciplinary narratives, define project outcomes, and present the proposal in a way that resonates with diverse review panels. We help clarify the research questions, articulate broader impacts, and align the project with NSF priorities related to responsible conduct of research.
We also help teams track relevant opportunities using IP-LINK, which aggregates NSF programs and cross-directorate initiatives.
