NSF ERC - Engineering Research Centers
The NSF Engineering Research Centers (ERC) program funds large, multi-institutional research centers designed to integrate engineering research, education, and innovation in order to address major national and societal challenges. ERCs operate at the forefront of engineering by uniting universities, industry partners, federal laboratories, community organizations, and other stakeholders to develop transformative technologies that can fundamentally reshape sectors such as energy, health, manufacturing, infrastructure, materials, environment, robotics, and advanced computing. Unlike standard NSF research grants, ERCs require a long-term strategic vision, robust organizational and managerial capacity, shared infrastructure, convergent research frameworks, and strong pathways for technology translation.
ERCs are expected to create innovation ecosystems, combining fundamental scientific inquiry with testbeds, pilot-scale facilities, industrial collaboration models, technology-transfer strategies, and experiential learning programs. Research activities typically involve convergent teams blending engineering, computer science, physical sciences, social sciences, design, business, and user-centered approaches. ERCs also emphasize workforce development through graduate and undergraduate research opportunities, research experiences for teachers, entrepreneurship training, and partnerships with community colleges and K–12 schools.
The program’s hallmark is its focus on convergence research—integrating knowledge, methods, and perspectives from multiple disciplines to tackle problems that cannot be solved within traditional engineering silos. ERCs must also demonstrate strong broader impacts, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) initiatives; broadening participation across STEM; and long-term community engagement. Strong ERC proposals present compelling engineering challenges, detailed research roadmaps, credible management structures, industrial partnerships, education integration, sustainability plans, and clear pathways to real-world impact.
Eligibility requires U.S. academic institutions to lead the center, typically forming multi-university partnerships. Nonprofit research organizations, Tribal organizations, community colleges, and qualified for-profit companies may participate as core or affiliate partners. ERC proposals undergo rigorous multi-stage review due to their scale, complexity, and national significance.
