NSF GRFP -- Graduate Research Fellowship Program

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is one of the nation’s most prestigious and long-standing fellowship programs supporting graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Established in 1952, NSF GRFP identifies and invests in outstanding early-career researchers who demonstrate potential to make significant contributions to their fields. Unlike NSF research grants awarded to institutions, GRFP directly funds the trainee, offering a flexible, portable award that allows fellows to focus on developing their research agenda and academic trajectory.

GRFP provides three years of financial support, including a generous annual stipend and cost-of-education allowance, which can be used across a five-year fellowship period. This flexibility enables recipients to pursue innovative, high-risk ideas, join leading research groups, and gain the skills necessary to become future STEM leaders. The program covers a wide range of disciplines across STEM and STEM education research.

Eligibility requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, enrollment in—or application to—an eligible U.S. research-based graduate program, and adherence to GRFP’s application-attempt rules (typically one attempt as an undergraduate and one as a graduate student). Applicants must articulate a clear, feasible, and meaningful research plan that demonstrates intellectual merit and broader impacts. The broader-impact component is particularly important and may include STEM outreach, mentorship, inclusive teaching, community engagement, diversity advocacy, or contributions to societal well-being.

NSF GRFP uses a holistic review process that assesses not only the proposed research but also the applicant’s trajectory, research experience, academic preparation, leadership, and commitment to broader impacts. Strong applications present a coherent narrative across the Personal Statement, Previous Research Experience, and Proposed Research Plan, showing clear alignment between past accomplishments, future goals, and NSF’s mission to promote scientific progress.
