NSF NNA - Navigating the New Arctic
The National Science Foundation’s Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) program supports research addressing rapid environmental, social, and economic changes occurring across the Arctic region. As climate change alters sea ice, ecosystems, infrastructure, and human activity, NSF funds collaborative projects that improve understanding of these transitions and help communities adapt to new conditions.
NSF NNA projects are intentionally interdisciplinary. Successful proposals often combine natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and data science, and may also involve partnerships with local governments, Indigenous communities, and international collaborators. Research topics may include changing weather patterns, permafrost stability, coastal erosion, marine ecosystems, transportation routes, resource management, and community resilience.
Unlike traditional single-discipline research proposals, NSF NNA submissions must integrate multiple perspectives into a unified project. Reviewers evaluate not only scientific merit but also stakeholder engagement, data sharing, and the ability to translate findings into usable knowledge. Community participation and collaboration planning are especially important components.
Proposals frequently involve complex logistics, including fieldwork in remote environments, coordination across institutions, and long-term observational efforts. A strong proposal clearly explains research objectives, project organization, and risk management while demonstrating cultural awareness and ethical engagement with Arctic communities.
Many otherwise strong applications struggle because they present separate research components rather than a cohesive program. Successful proposals show how each discipline contributes to a shared scientific and societal goal.
ScienceDocs assists research teams in organizing interdisciplinary projects, clarifying project management structures, and communicating complex collaborations effectively to review panels. We help investigators present a coordinated research narrative that connects scientific discovery with real-world impact.
