NSF NRT National Research Traineeship
The NSF National Research Traineeship (NRT) program develops the next generation of STEM researchers through innovative, interdisciplinary graduate training models. Unlike traditional graduate fellowships that support individual students, NRT awards transform institutional training environments and promote new approaches to workforce development. Programs integrate cutting-edge research with professional skills training, cross-disciplinary collaboration, communication development, ethics, mentoring, and experiential learning—preparing trainees for a broad range of scientific, industry, and societal roles. NRT emphasizes inclusive practices that broaden participation and cultivate diverse, well-prepared scientific talent.
NRT projects often focus on emerging areas such as data science, AI, quantum engineering, climate resilience, advanced materials, biotechnology, and complex systems modeling. Trainees gain experience working across disciplinary boundaries, engaging with external partners, and applying their research to real-world challenges. Many programs involve collaborations with industry, government agencies, national laboratories, nonprofits, or community organizations to provide internships, applied research opportunities, or societal impact pathways.
Eligibility requires applicants to be U.S. institutions of higher education, typically universities with robust graduate STEM programs. Proposals must present a cohesive training vision that integrates research excellence with innovative pedagogy, mentoring structures, cohort-based learning, and recruitment and retention strategies that promote diversity and equity. Budget requests may include trainee support, program administration, curriculum development, experiential learning activities, and evaluation frameworks. NRT reviewers assess intellectual merit, training innovation, institutional commitment, sustainability, and broader impacts across both research and education.
Successful NRT proposals demonstrate strong research foundations, clear training outcomes, meaningful stakeholder partnerships, and evidence-based approaches to program evaluation. Because NRT centers on institutional and cultural transformation, proposals must articulate how the training model will persist beyond the award period and how it advances national workforce needs in high-priority STEM fields.
