NSF S-STEM Scholarships (Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)

The National Science Foundation’s S-STEM (Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program supports universities in providing scholarships and academic support to students pursuing STEM degrees. The goal is to increase recruitment, retention, and graduation of academically talented students with financial need while strengthening the STEM workforce.

S-STEM proposals are education-focused rather than traditional research proposals. In addition to providing student scholarships, funded projects typically include mentoring, cohort activities, tutoring, career development, research experiences, and partnerships with industry or graduate programs. Successful projects demonstrate how financial support and structured academic programming work together to improve student outcomes.

Review panels evaluate both the scholarship plan and the educational strategy. Applicants must describe recruitment methods, selection criteria, advising and mentoring structure, and mechanisms for tracking student success. A strong evaluation and assessment plan is essential, including measurable outcomes related to retention, persistence, and career placement.

Many proposals struggle because they emphasize the financial aid component but underdevelop the educational framework. Competitive submissions clearly explain how the project will improve student achievement and broaden participation in STEM fields. Institutions are expected to use data-driven approaches and demonstrate institutional commitment to sustaining the program.

Because S-STEM awards often involve coordination across departments such as faculty, advising offices, financial aid, and institutional research, organization and clarity are critical. The proposal must present a coherent student support system rather than a collection of services.

ScienceDocs assists universities in structuring student support programs, developing evaluation plans, and preparing proposals aligned with NSF education program expectations. We help institutions clearly communicate recruitment strategies, mentoring approaches, and measurable student success outcomes.
