NSF STC - Science and Technology Centers
The NSF Science and Technology Centers (STC) program supports long-term, interdisciplinary research centers designed to address complex scientific and societal challenges that cannot be solved within a single discipline. STCs unite researchers across universities, government laboratories, industry partners, and community organizations to pursue transformative discoveries while advancing education, workforce development, and knowledge transfer. Unlike standard investigator-driven NSF awards, STCs operate under expansive, multi-institutional cooperative agreements lasting up to 10 years, enabling deep integration of research, innovation, and societal impact at scale.
STCs typically focus on frontier areas such as quantum science, advanced materials, biological design, artificial intelligence, complex systems modeling, climate resilience, microelectronics, and emerging technologies. The centers support shared experimental and computational infrastructure, multi-institutional research teams, industry partnerships, entrepreneurship training, outreach to K–12 and underserved communities, and programs that strengthen the national STEM workforce. Because STCs are expected to generate broad and lasting impact, proposals must articulate a compelling long-term vision, a strong management structure, strategies for technology translation, and clear plans for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Eligibility is broad but highly competitive. Lead institutions must be U.S.-based universities or non-profit research organizations, and proposals must demonstrate institutional commitment—often including cost-sharing, dedicated faculty lines, shared facilities, or long-term strategic integration. Collaborating organizations may include industry, national laboratories, Tribal organizations, MSIs, community colleges, state agencies, and nonprofits. Successful proposals combine world-class intellectual merit with a strong plan for societal benefit, community engagement, and sustainable center operations beyond NSF support.
Because STC proposals require large-scale coordination, detailed management plans, vision statements, education strategies, and multi-year research roadmaps, applicants must carefully align their narratives with NSF expectations for impact, integration, and feasibility.
