Pathology Grant Writer and Editor Dr. Dolber
Pathology Grant Writer Dr. Dolber’s education includes a BA in psychology from Johns Hopkins, an MS in zoology from Penn State, and a PhD in pathology from Duke. He worked in a similarly broad range of fields during his academic career. While an assistant professor in Pediatrics and later in Medicine at Duke, he studied structure-function correlation in cardiac muscle, regarding impulse propagation and mechanics. While an assistant and then associate professor in Surgery at Duke and at the same time a research physiologist at the Durham VA Medical Center, he pursued studies of the neural control of autonomic function, especially in the setting of spinal cord injury. Ultimately, at Duke and then at the University of Texas Medical Branch, he worked in the fields of tumor immunology and cancer immunotherapy. His research experience includes whole-animal physiology and pharmacology (especially cystometry and electromyography), in vitro physiology and pharmacology (especially in vitro contractility and patch-clamp electrophysiology), light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy), electron microscopy, histology, morphometry, unbiased stereology, computer programming for data acquisition and analysis, small animal surgery, and cell culture.
Early in his career, Dr. Dolber had the pleasure of twice attending Dr. George Gopen’s writing seminars at Duke on Writing from the Reader’s Perspective. This experience made clear that even grammatically correct writing was defective if the reviewer couldn’t easily follow it, and that it was the writer’s responsibility to deal with this or pay the price for confusing or annoying the reviewer. Beyond that, he learned that it was not enough that the reviewer understands the writer; the writer’s excitement over the work and its implications must also be transmitted to the reviewer. Mastering this led to regular grant funding (by VA Merit Reviews, NIH, Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, and others) and publication (55 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as the American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Brain Research, and Journal of Urology). In addition, Dr. Dolber has served as a grant reviewer for the NIH, the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation, and the Institute for Medical Research, and as a manuscript reviewer for journals including American Journal of Physiology, British Journal of Pharmacology, European Journal of Neuroscience, and Journal of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. Dr. Dolber has twice attended the NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants Administration, has taken coursework in writing CME needs assessments and foundation grants, and is a member of the American Medical Writers Association and the Grant Professionals Association. Dr. Dolber’s extensive experience as a pathology grant writer as well as a researcher has made him excellent at reviewing and editing not only for accuracy but also for clarity, persuasiveness, and fundability.
