First Impressions Count

People are often confused about the differences between the Resume and the Curriculum vitae. Their formats and content are different and depend upon the purpose.

Corporate, business, and industrial employers (commonly, employers in non-academic settings) use the Resume to document a potential job applicant’s education, work history, and experience. Often, the first point of contact between a job applicant and a prospective employer, the Resume must make a good first impression to elicit an invitation for a job interview. This document is often used in non-academic settings and is usually very short, one or two pages.

Headings in a Resume usually include:

  • Applicant’s name,
  • Contact information,
  • Educational experience,
  • Employment history, and perhaps,
  • Professional experiences (e.g., training), and
  • Names and addresses of individuals willing to provide personal references.

Note that depending upon the purpose, more than one version of a Resume could be needed.

The Curriculum vitae (CV) is often used in academic or research settings and provides similar but more detailed information. The CV is longer and more detailed than a Resume, and over time, the CV can continue to grow comprise many pages. Like a Resume, depending upon the purpose, more than one version of a CV could be needed.

Headings in a CV usually include:

  • Applicant’s name,
  • Contact information,
  • Education,
  • Teaching experience,
  • Research experience,
  • Publications lists,
  • Presentations lists,
  • Awards,
  • Honors,
  • Fellowships,
  • Grants sought / received,
  • Professional affiliations,
  • Professional licenses,
  • Other details as needed, and
  • Names and addresses of individuals willing to provide personal references.

The CV of a given individual can accommodate many details and will be revised frequently to incorporate new accomplishments and keep the information up-to-date. The CV of an inexperienced person, new to their field, could be 2–4 pages long while that of a more experienced person can be 40–50 pages or more.
