Dr. Sampson is a PhD trained inorganic chemist and materials scientist with over ten years of research experience in various fields, including catalysis, transition metal chemistry, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, optoelectronic devices, and thin film fabrication.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with a minor in Environmental Science/Policy. While an undergraduate student, Dr. Sampson participated in materials chemistry internships at Sandia National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of California, San Diego under the guidance of Prof. Clifford Kubiak. His graduate work focused on developing homogeneous organometallic catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to liquid fuels. During his tenure at UC-San Diego, he collaborated with research groups at CalTech, Yale, Northwestern, UC Berkeley, and Stanford through multi-university research grants. Dr. Sampson recently completed a postdoctoral research position at Argonne National Laboratory, where he focused on two research topics: (1) doping transition metals into lead halide perovskite solar absorbers for the development of intermediate band solar cells and (2) fabricating few-atom metal oxide clusters via atomic layer deposition for water oxidation and proton reduction. These projects were funded by the US Department of Energy through a DOE EFRC, the Argonne Northwestern Solar Energy Research Center (ANSER). In his graduate and postgraduate research, Dr. Sampson has published over 17 peer-reviewed manuscripts in highly esteemed journals, such as Journal of the American Chemical Society, Energy & Environmental Science, Nature Communications, Angewandte Chemie, and Inorganic Chemistry, and had presented his research at national and specialty conferences.
Dr. Sampson enjoys helping other researchers more clearly express their research findings, thoughts, and ideas. He has previous editing and rewriting experience for both academic and industry clients and can provide his expertise to editing a variety of technical documents, including manuscripts, grant proposals, presentations, posters, and patents.
