Dr Sastre – PhD in Math, Academic and SBIR Grant Consultant Instructor
Grant Consultant Dr. Sastre has nearly 40 years of experience in research grants development, study section organization and participation as peer reviewer and as a grantee. During his nearly 30-year research career he received peer-reviewed funding from NIH, NSF, AHA, DoE and the DoD PRMRP. He was steadily invited to be a member of NIH review panels. In 2007 joined the NIH, first as a Scientific Review Officer at the Center for Scientific Review (CSR), where he organized review panels for numerous grant mechanisms and initiatives (e.g., P41 National Centers, R01, R21, SBIR/STTR, S10s, Academic-Industrial Partnerships, Clinical-Translational grants) and many others. He then moved to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), where at his retirement in 2017 he was Program Director and Acting Deputy Director of Extramural Programs. In those capacities, he served as point-of-contact for several of the high-profile NIBIB funding initiatives: National Resource Centers and bioengineering research partnerships; he led the development of the Trailblazer Award; managed at various times the nuclear medicine, electromagnetics, CT/x-ray, EPR and structural biology (NMR) research portfolios, and served as liaison for several trans-NIH (NCI, NIDDK, NHLBI) and trans-agency initiatives (OSTP, DoE Isotope Program).
With his extensive experience as a working scientist, reviewer, panel organizer and Program Director, Dr. Sastre has a clear idea of what approaches are most likely to work, what does not work, and why in writing grant applications. His experience combining all aspects of medical imaging and biomedical engineering with many of the most pressing aspects of medical unmet needs in many disciplines (e.g., cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases) allow him to advise applicants in high-level grant strategy and grantsmanship details essential for success.
Grant Consultant Dr. Sastre received his B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. from Cornell University, and he obtained training under an NINDS postdoctoral fellowship at both Cornell University and the Cornell Medical College. He began his academic career on the faculty in the Department of Physiology (1977-1988) and of Neuroscience (1979-1988) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
