Academic and SBIR Grant Proposal Writer Dr. John B. is an expert in infectious and chronic diseases. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His 17-year career in academic medicine began as an Instructor at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center. While at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) in Baltimore, Dr. John B. was the principal investigator of multiple VA Merit Review Awards and the program grant, which established the Retrovirus Research Center at the VAMC. Dr. John B. has also been a member of NIH Study Sections, reviewing SBIRs, RO1s, and contracts in the areas of technologies, devices, and therapeutics.  

Dr. John B. has over 25 years in the pharmaceutical industry, the biotechnology sector, as well as academic and government laboratories. Dr. John B. joined GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he was the Director of Technology Development in Translational Medicine and Genetics. In his technology development role, Dr. John B. assessed external technologies, identifying new investment opportunities for GSK’s Technology Investment Board. As a thought leader, he was part of a “Blue Sky” team that designed future scenarios for the pharmaceutical industry. His work with the Human Biomarker Laboratories led to tools for use in stratifying patients and monitoring efficacy in clinical studies. Specifically, he developed biomarkers for enabling studies of new therapeutics for COPD, diabetes/metabolic syndrome, migraine, and neurodegenerative diseases.  Before joining GSK, he was a biochemist at Roche and the Director of Preclinical Research and Development at two successful biotechnology companies.

As an enthusiastic entrepreneur, Dr. John B. was a founder and Chief Scientific Officer of a company which developed and commercialized a diagnostic for major depressive disorder. While there, he developed the intellectual property and is the inventor on nine U.S. and foreign patents.  Dr. John B. was also a co-founder and Managing partner of a consulting firm that aided life science companies to shape their business strategy, promote innovation, and accelerate commercial success.
