Dr. Jim – Academic and SBIR Grant Writer, Ph.D. in Psychophysiology
SBIR Grant Writer Dr. Jim has more than 17 years of experience with the SBIR program and has received awards from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS), serving as principal investigator on grants totaling more than $10M. He has also served as a Study Section reviewer for these same agencies for over a decade and is intimately familiar with the 5-axis proposal scoring processes and dynamics, upon which funding depends. As a deeply experienced reviewer, he is highly skilled at tuning proposals for review.
He is accomplished in all facets of technology translation, taking projects through the complete cycle of concept-design-SBIR funding-implementation. He has over 25 years experience in the design, development and clinical evaluation of a wide range of health care technologies: 1) Medical electronics: high performance electroenchephalographs; multichannel bioimpedance for cardiac and brain monitoring; intraoperative neuromonitors; positron emission tomography (PET) and near-infrared intracerebral monitoring. Systems-level device design experience includes those based on specialized sensors, embedded high speed processors and ancillary electronics (e.g. display controllers, wireless communications). In close association, he has extensive experience in associated software design and development and 2) Neurocognitive and Behavioral Assessment and Management Systems: He directed the development and validation of computerized versions of the entire Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS) assessment battery for controlled clinical trials of treatment candidates, including the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale (ADAS), the “gold standard” primary outcome measure. He has developed computerized cognitive and behavioral assessment systems for research and clinical trials of drug candidates to treat schizophrenia. He has designed and developed behavioral management systems for people with mental illnesses and web-operationalized the comprehensive Illness Management and Recovery (IMR) program. He also has experience in telehealth, web-based systems and cross-platform mobile devices.
He received undergraduate degrees in chemistry and biology and a Ph.D. in psychophysiology from UC Irvine where he received the President’s Undergraduate Research Award, the Brython P. Davis Scholarship and co-authored numerous R01 grant applications with School of Medicine faculty.
