Space Systems Command (SSC) – Broad Agency Announcement
Space Systems Command (SSC), a core acquisition arm of the U.S. Space Force, issues Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs) to accelerate innovation in space systems, satellite technologies, rapid launch, resilient communications, cyber-protected architectures, and next-generation on-orbit capabilities. SSC is responsible for the lifecycle of national space assets—development, launch, command and control, sustainment, and modernization—and its BAAs serve as a critical pathway for scientific research, prototype development, and dual-use commercial transition.
SSC BAAs support technologies that enhance national security, improve space resilience, and enable persistent space domain awareness. Priority research areas include space-based sensing, autonomous mission operations, cryogenic systems, radiation-tolerant computing, position/navigation/timing, advanced space sensors, modular spacecraft components, adaptive ground control software, artificial-intelligence-driven mission analysis, quantum-enhanced communication, and cyber-protected satellite networks. Unlike slower acquisition programs, SSC leverages rapid experimentation, early flight demonstrations, and digital engineering platforms to reduce risk and accelerate transition into operational architectures.
Eligibility is broad, including universities, nonprofits, federally funded research and development centers, large defense contractors, and for-profit corporations of all sizes—including startups developing dual-use space systems. Many of the most competitive proposals originate from commercial companies offering rapid innovation cycles, scalable manufacturing, or cloud-native mission software. Foreign participation may be restricted depending on classification and export-control constraints.
Submitting to SSC BAAs generally begins with a technical abstract or white paper, followed by invited full proposals. Early discussions with SSC program officers are highly valuable for aligning technical objectives with strategic mission needs. Evaluation criteria emphasize scientific merit, innovation, feasibility, digital engineering integration, alignment with Space Force mission priorities, and the likelihood of transition into future space program architectures.
