Technology Transition Support

Helping research move beyond funding into real-world use

Securing funding is a major milestone in a research or innovation project — but it is not the end of the journey. Many promising technologies struggle after initial success, not because the science is weak, but because moving from research results to operational use requires planning, integration, and coordination across technical, organizational, and practical constraints.

ScienceDocs developed its Technology Transition services after more than two decades supporting SBIR and STTR projects across federal agencies including NIH, NSF, and DoD. Working with hundreds of research teams and startups, we repeatedly observed the same challenge: projects succeeded scientifically but stalled when they attempted to function outside controlled research environments.

This stage — often called the “valley of death” — occurs between proof-of-concept and adoption. Systems must integrate with workflows, users must understand them, data pipelines must exist, and organizations must have a credible path to implementation. Without guidance, even well-funded technologies can fail to move forward.

Technology Transition at ScienceDocs addresses this gap. Our role is to help research teams and organizations understand how a technology becomes usable, adoptable, and sustainable in real-world settings.

Research Translation

Research demonstrates what is possible. Implementation requires understanding how it will actually operate.
Our Research Translation services help teams clarify system requirements, operational constraints, feasibility, and deployment considerations before large development investments are made.

This is often particularly valuable after Phase I SBIR/STTR results, pilot studies, or early prototypes.

IP-LINK

Successful transition also requires awareness of the surrounding innovation landscape. Many technologies fail to advance because teams are unaware of complementary intellectual property, collaborators, or funding opportunities.

IP-LINK helps researchers and organizations discover licensable university technologies, related innovations, and relevant funding pathways. It supports informed development decisions and reduces duplication of effort while identifying potential partners.

Intellectual Property & Patent Support

A research outcome must often become a defined asset before adoption can occur. We assist teams in identifying protectable innovations, coordinating with patent counsel, and aligning technical documentation with intellectual property strategy.

This ensures that inventions are positioned for licensing, investment, or cooperative development.

Commercialization & Adoption Strategy

Adoption depends on more than technical performance. Technologies must fit user environments, organizational workflows, regulatory realities, and operational needs.

Our commercialization support focuses on practical transition pathways — identifying potential users, aligning development with real deployment conditions, and strengthening Phase II/Phase III positioning for federal and institutional programs.

Our Perspective

ScienceDocs’ experience supporting research funding efforts has given us a unique view of the innovation lifecycle. We often encounter technologies at the earliest stages of feasibility, and we have repeatedly seen the challenges that arise after funding is secured.

Technology Transition services extend our longstanding role: helping research not only get funded, but ultimately become usable.
